Types of signs in occupational safety and how to use them at construction sites

Labor safety is always an important issue given the top priority in every project. In order for all employees to always seriously implement labor safety, people regulate and use signs at important locations that require safety attention. There are 4 common types of work safety signs including prohibition signs, danger signs, mandatory signs, and reminder and instruction signs.

Prohibition sign

Prohibition signs are one of the types of signs in occupational safety. This type of sign is a red circle with a diagonal line in the middle, placed on a white background (except for no-entry signs).

Classification and usage:

  • Sign prohibiting entry for people and construction vehicles: All people and construction vehicles on the construction site when seeing this sign are not allowed to enter except responsible people and vehicles.
  • Signs prohibiting people from entering: All unauthorized persons are prohibited from entering, but machines and vehicles are not prohibited.
  • Signs prohibiting vehicles and construction equipment from entering: Usually placed in front of dangerous locations with construction machinery and vehicles moving in, such as locations where the soil is weak or prone to landslides, etc.
  • No-smoking signs: hang in flammable and explosive places, in closed rooms, and in air-conditioned rooms.
  • No-fire signs: Placed in flammable and explosive places containing a lot of fuel.
  • Signs prohibiting the use of mobile phones: Placed at locations related to gasoline, oil, or near communication equipment of the project.

Danger sign

Usually shaped like a triangle with a black border on a yellow background. It is intuitive and describes possible hazards to help people recognize hazards and take precautions.

Classification and usage:

  • General danger signs: Do not specify any dangerous places but alert workers to the risk of unexpected danger that may occur. Be very careful at or around the work location where this sign is located.
  • Fire and explosion hazard signs: Describe the risk of fire and explosion which are often placed in flammable and explosive places.
  • Electric shock danger sign: Warns workers to stay away or they may be electrocuted.
  • Danger signs when working with machinery and equipment: Placed at locations with machinery or working equipment in general.
  • Dangerous signs about hoisting locations: Tell workers to be careful at locations where materials or equipment are being hoisted. The objects being hoisted may fall unexpectedly.
  • Signs of danger of slipping, falling, or tripping: Warn workers who may slip, fall down stairs, or trip and fall.

Mandatory signage

Usually, there is a circle with a light blue background, inside is a white image that visually describes what is required of people working on the construction site.

Classification and usage:

  • Signs requiring the wearing of labor helmets: Usually placed in front of the construction site gate, requiring everyone entering the construction site to do so.
  • Signs requiring the wearing of protective clothing: Placed at the construction site gate requiring all workers to do so, except administrative staff, warehouse keepers, and service staff on the construction site who do not need to do so.

Warning and instruction signs

Usually rectangular in shape on a green, light blue, or red background. On the sign are written reminders or instructions for people working on the construction site to properly implement labor safety measures.

  • Safety reminder signs: Placed in many places on the construction site, especially places that are easily visible during work. It reminds workers to always pay attention and prevent accidents.
